Satyr stopping a deer by the antlers

Satyr stopping a deer by the antlers

The overdoor Satyr stopping a deer by the antlers presents a scene framed by different natural elements, characterized by two satyrs stopping a deer: the first rides it, clutching a basket of fruit in his hands; the second holds the animal by the antlers.

The motifs of Carditello's overdoors, woven in wool and silk based on the models of Fedele Fischetti (Naples, 1732 – 1792), are taken from Greek mythology.

With their sometimes-lascivious behavior, devoted to wine and other entertainment, the satyrs, or fauns, belong to the court of the gods Pan and Dionysus. As a symbol of fertility and the vital force of nature, they are, without a doubt, among the subjects that recur most in the works dedicated to the mythical inhabitants of the woods.
