Red seabreams, squid and oysters

Red seabreams, squid and oysters presents the fruits of a rich fishing trip in a sympathetic and almost childlike manner.

The work, which was among the paintings selected by Hackert to decorate the Carditello Picture Gallery, was chosen specifically for the Dressing Room, where it was a pendant to another still life depicting game.

The work depicts two freshly caught red seabreams in the foreground, which stand out surrounded by oysters, sea urchins, corals, and squid. Particularly interesting is the left part of the painting, where seafood is represented: a possible reference to Onofrio Loth's Oysters Bodegón, exhibited at the Museum of Valencia.
