Nymph crowning a satyr

Nymph crowning a satyr

Woven in wool and silk based on the models of Fedele Fischetti (Naples, 1732 – 1792), the overdoor Nymph crowning a satyr represents a scene set in a forest in which a Naiad, a water nymph, is found in the act of crowning a satyr.

The subject of the Naiad, a water nymph from Arcadia, is one of the most frequent in depictions of the mythical inhabitants of the woods, as she is considered the bearer of fertility and protector of marriage.

Satyrs, on the other hand, are generally represented as bearded human beings, but with ears, tail, and horns, as well as with equine or goat legs. They are often described as beings who adopt a lascivious behaviour: devoted to wine, dancing and playing the syrinx and sistrum.
