King Henry IV recognised by his knights at the gamekeeper's house

The tapestry King Henry IV recognised by his knights at the gamekeeper's house bears Duranti's signature.

The work, despite being focused on the presence, at the house of the gamekeeper miller, of Henry IV – this time recognized by his men – provides an interesting view of what must have been a typical rural house of the time. Details such as the shelf stocked with supplies, a wooden ladder, a basket, a frame with a fortress and the gamekeeper's rifle hanging on the wall can be recognized.

The scene includes twelve figures, among which one can recognize the gamekeeper with his family, kneeling, and the sovereign – filled with anger – intent on threatening Bellegarde, one of his three court knights.

Historically, Henry IV's marriage proposal to Maria de' Medici is placed after this event. The sovereign married by proxy after having entrusted Bellegarde with the task of going to Florence to deliver the wedding ring.
