Farmers, roosters, vegetables and donkey

Farmers, roosters, vegetables and donkey

The work Farmers, roosters, vegetables and donkey is attributed to the painter Gaetano Cusati, although it appears in ancient inventories as referring to an unknown Cesare Gappe.

The painting became part of the collections of the Royal Site of Carditello from 1817, when it was displayed first in the Dining Room, then – from 1911 – together with other paintings in the Gallery.

In 1919, following the disposal of the crown assets, the canvas was sent first to the Royal Palace of Caserta, then to the then National Gallery of Capodimonte; in 1927 it was destined to Villa Rosebery “for the purpose of furnishing or decorating”, then handed over to the Presidency of the Republic in 1958.

After a long exhibition at the Palazzo del Quirinale, the work returned to Villa Rosebery in Naples.
