Signed by Giacomo Nani, the work is part of those present at the Royal Site of Carditello since 1792, chosen by Hackert to decorate the Royal Apartment.
The canvas was placed in the Entrance Hall, at the time referred to as "another straw painted room", where the inventory lists two paintings with “dining things”.
After the exile in Palermo, in 1817, the painting returned to the same room, which was transformed into the main entrance hall in 1880.
Probably, the still life constitutes one of the most interesting works in the Picture Gallery.
On a kitchen surface, various vegetables appear on display: aubergines, tomatoes, peppers, winter squash and a beautiful orange melon. The vegetables accompany a calf's head and a dead duck, ready to be cooked. In the background you can see a basket full of other products, framed here and there by grape leaves.
