Ascension of the Saviour with the twelve apostles

Ascension of the Saviour with the twelve apostles

The altarpiece Ascension of the Saviour with the twelve apostles was made for the Chapel of the Royal Site of Carditello, dedicated to the Ascension of Jesus Christ, officially inaugurated by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon in 1792, and in use until 1936.

This is the only surviving canvas of the three that originally adorned the room, decorated by the Tuscan brothers Angelo and Carlo Brunelli. The work is dated 1788, but was only delivered in 1794, together with the altarpieces, now disappeared, of St. Vitus, protector of agricultural activities, and St. Hubert (or St. Eustace), protector of hunting.

In 1974, perhaps for some restoration work, the canvas was transferred to Caserta to the headquarters of the Land Reclamation Authority of Lower Volturno River Basin, and only recovered from there in 2014, when it was transferred to the Royal Palace of Caserta.

Every year, the altarpiece returns to Carditello for the events of the Feast of the Ascension.
